By Kaleigh McGregor-Bales

I spoke with Jackie Shandu from Durban, South Africa on his views of climate change and colonialism.

Around the world, colonialism and economic domination by the rich  Global North has resulted in the depletion of resources and the impoverishment of the peoples in Global South. As a result Global South countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change and  lack the resources required to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

By burning fossil fuels the Global North has used up all the atmospheric greenhouse gas space and has caused climate change. In comparison, Global South countries have negligible historic emissions and do not have access to their fair share of atmospheric space.

Through colonialism Global North countries got rich off of the backs of the Global South. They borrowed from the planet and borrowed from future generations as their destructive conquests spread across the globe. It is now their responsibility to repay their climate debt.
