Help the CYCC educate 10,000+ youth across Canada!
Starting at 7:00 this morning, organizers with the CYCC orchestrated an elaborate hoax by re-releasing an Environment Canada Climate Change education program from the 1990’s. The prank drew attention to shifting government priorities on climate change and showed that less than two decades ago, Canada took its climate commitments and its commitment to involving youth and future generations in the process seriously. The hoax also served to launch our Wings of Change workshop campaigns, a by-youth-for-youth education campaign aiming to reach over 10,000 young people across Canada in our first few months.
As part of our 2011 strategy we’re engaging with students from across Canada in discussion around climate change, climate justice, and real solutions to these problems. The Wings of Change is an interactive, skills-based workshop that links the hard science of climate change to practical, community based alternatives and strategies for collective action. It touches on the importance of social movements of the past and how collective, strategic action can tip the scales of power back into the hands of the public. At the end of each workshop, participants will be asked to use words and pictures to represent the kind of Canada that they want to be living in 20 years from now, and record these visions on a fabric feather. After a number of workshops are complete, we will assemble the feathers into a giant bird costume, whose wings will carry the messages of thousands of children.
Wings of Change will encourage young people to find their political voices and provide them with the opportunity to be part of a larger movement. The project combines principles of pageantry, theatre and collective artistic expression to deliver messages directly from young people to the halls of political power.
Now We Need Your Help!
We made a commitment to step it up where the government is failing and to deliver these workshops, but to make that happen we need you. Over the summer we trained over 100 youth to facilitate these workshops across Canada, but we need to get into classrooms from coast to coast.
Here’s How You Can Get Involved
1. Request a Wings of Change Workshop by emailing email@example.com
2. Donate to the Wings of Change Project on Small Change Fund
Want to Become a Local Wings of Change Leader?
Want to take the next step to get involved with the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition and the Wings of Change campaign?
Great! We are recruiting youth to coordinate the roll out this campaign in their communities across Canada.
As the local coordinator for your community, city or campus you will help connect already trained facilitators with local teachers and schools as well as to other opportunities to hold a Wings of Change workshop in your area.
Coordinators will gain valuable experience working in a youth run environmental organization, as well as with coordinating the implementation of a nation-wide project with a goal of educating well over 10,000 other young people across Canada.
What we’re looking for:
- some knowledge of and interest in stopping climate change
- an understanding of the idea of climate justice and anti-oppression
- experience with fundraising and event coordination
- experience coordinating volunteers
If you have any of these qualities, or are just interested in getting some experience in them, drop us a line!
