Applications for the Canadian Youth Delegation to COP-17 in Durban, South Africa are now open!
Solving a crisis with the breadth and scope of the climate change will require both local and global solutions. Our window to implement real solutions is closing, and each year the human impacts of a changing climate grow worse and worse, hitting hardest and first in those nations least responsible for this crisis. Meanwhile, wealthy nations from the Global North have year after year derailed international progress. In bed with industry, our own government has turned to negotiating behind closed doors, refusing to take the necessary steps to get off of dirty energy like the Alberta tar sands.
In other words, we have a lot of work to do.
Canada is internationally recognized as one of the worst climate criminals, blocking progress year after year, and we can expect more of the same heading into Durban. What happens at these negotiations will depend entirely on the momentum we create over the coming months; the demands we make of our government and how we follow up at home and on the international stage.
In the past, youth from around the world have played a powerful moral role in the talks, and the Canadian Youth Delegation continues to be critical in supporting the international youth climate movement, engaging Canadians and holding the Canadian government and delegation accountable.
– Cameron Fenton, CYCC National Director
